The African Leadership University has partnered with Imisi 3D as the Rwanda Country Partner and host for the 2020 AR/VR Hackathon made possible by Facebook. An AR/VR Hackathon is an event where developers, coders, designers, strategists, come together to create and problem-solve to build solutions leveraging Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality technologies. The hackathon targets those interested in art, entrepreneurship, graphics, 3D Modelling, film, education and other spaces. This year, the AR/VR Hackathon is themed ‘Africa in sight- Our Future in XR’, which shadows solutions in Education, Healthcare (including Covid-19 responses), Tourism, Gaming and Climate.
The objective of hosting an AR/VR Hackathon is to create the awareness of the technology in the continent by increasing access to XR resources and accelerate XR talent which would lead to the emergence of more careers in the industry. This year’s hackathon will happen in two stages: the online stage and the 48-hour nonstop hackathon grand finale.
Registration for interested participants is already ongoing and commenced on the 1st, August 2020 and will close on 1st, November 2020. Online Learning has already begun and will run until November, while the offline Grand Finale will take place on the 4th-6th December 2020. The Hackathon is open to anyone and everyone in Africa.
Each country will have a cash prize of $ 2,000 with the winner receiving $ 1,000, the 2nd runners-up receiving $ 600 and the 3rd runners-up receiving $ 400. In addition, the outstanding team from the continent will receive tickets to Unite Europe. Participants will have the opportunity to receive mentorship from expert practitioners in XR, and be a part of a large network of AR/VR enthusiasts across Africa- including investors. You will also have the chance to increase your knowledge of extended reality technologies by attending online masterclasses and workshops that will take you through ARCore, WebVR and Unity 3D. Most importantly you will have the opportunity to apply knowledge gained to real-world solutions. opportunity to create with, and learn about Virtual and Augmented Reality.
